Who we are

A husband and wife team who have over 25 years combined experience in cycle hire and cycle mechanics. John is the brains behind the technical stuff and Jayne is the glamorous assistant, always at hand with the serving and paperwork during weekends and school holidays.

Experience of Cycle Hire and Mechanics

John's parents ran a cycle hire whilst he was growing up. He soon followed in his father's footsteps and took to tinkering with bikes, getting a job at the same firm when he left school. He soon became a fully qualified cycle technician. Jayne joined the firm not long after they married and worked there for 5 years alongside her school job. 20 years after starting work with bikes; John thought he'd give it a go and try his hand opening their own business and here we are now at The Bike Barn.

 Welcome to the Great Outdoors!
We believe there's nothing better than exploring the great outdoors on a bike. With today's apparent necessity to be using technology constantly it is a fantastic alternative way to relax. Let the wind blow through your hair as you speed down the hills and see things you've not noticed driving past in the car. There's not much of the local area we can't tell you about and we both know the Tissington Trail like the back of our hands. We can also recommend the good local pubs too, well it would be rude not to share the information about refreshment stops wouldn't it?

Our Commitment to the Environment.

With the huge sustainability of the cycling lifestyle, we are keen to replicate this by being sustainable and ethical in our business approach.  Here are some of the ways we are operating in a sustainable and ethical way;

  • Our hirers are exploring the Peak District National Park using sustainable transport (our bicycles) this reduces the carbon footprint of tourists to the area whilst still providing them with the amazing adventures and experiences.

  • We are proud of our reconditioned bicycle sales and the positive impact on the environment that this section of our business has – recycling in the literal form!

  • All of our waste goes to a local recycling centre, we even share our bins with our neighbouring businesses!

  • Whilst sanitising our bikes between hires, we will only wash our hire bikes when absolutely necessary, particularly during drought conditions.

  • When servicing bikes we will only replace parts as and when necessary, we will not sell new parts purely for the profit, we have a substantial collection of perfectly serviceable used parts from previously broken bikes. We only dispose of what cannot be used in the future so to save waste.

  • We are looking to move towards more sustainable products for use in our workshop in order to reduce our carbon footprint for example; refillable bike cleaners and larger oil bottles in order to make cuts to our plastic waste.
